The exam system of NUS needs to be improved

I just learnt from Andrew who studies in SMU that apparently, they have exams where they go in with their laptops and do their exams on their computers.

When I heard it, it was like WTF. How come NUS don't have such things???????

Firstly, it is convenient for both students and the markers. For MCQs, it can be marked by the computers straight away. For those fill in the blanks kind, the marker can probably input a few options which are the answers and also get it marked straight away.

For essays, markers will no longer have to put up with lousy handwriting and students will not present lousy handwriting either. Also, it is far easier for students to edit their essays using the computer. Just ask any student and they can tell you that they do not need to throw away one whole piece of paper anymore when they write a few paragraphs and realise they wrote most of it out of point. Also, it will be more environmental.

The only exception that I can think of is probably econs papers where students need to draw graphs and perhaps the conventional form of doing exams would still be applicable.

But seriously, the fact that NUS is still stuck at using pens and papers for most of their exams while SMU, who have a lesser students than FASS has already progressed to such a stage shows how much more ahead SMU is in terms of their adminstration.

I just wonder whether it is because of the fact that we are the top uni in Singapore in terms of university ranking that we have become complacent and the administrative staff have started to become old coots who just continue with the old ways and while their time away. The school fees that we are paying for is seriously going to waste and surely more can be done.

If there is a way to give feedback, I will mention this. Hope to see some improvement to the school.
